Gas fees, finally explained without math
Gas is an auction, not a price list. The same transaction costs cents on a quiet Tuesday and dollars during a hyped mint because you are bidding against everyone else who wants block space right now.
The two settings that fix most overpaying
- Base fee: the going rate, burned by the network. If a wallet lets you lower it, transactions simply wait longer - usually fine for claims and votes.
- Priority fee: the tip that orders the queue. Most wallets over-suggest it during congestion. Dropping it a notch rarely costs more than a minute.
When to just wait
Gas follows hype cycles inside the day: new mint, new memecoin, new panic. If nothing about your transaction is urgent, the cheapest block space is historically in the low-activity hours of the weekend.
